March is here, and that means it’s time to ignite curiosity, inspire innovation, and celebrate girls in STEM! Expanding Girls’ Horizons in Science and Engineering Month is all about encouraging young girls to explore the endless possibilities of science, technology, engineering, and math. And what better way to do that than with a hands-on invention kit that makes learning feel like play?
At Makey Makey, we believe that STEM is about tinkering, inventing, and thinking outside the box. It’s about turning fruit into musical instruments, cardboard into game controllers, and everyday objects into interactive experiences. With the right tools, every girl can see herself as a creator, engineer, scientist, or inventor—and that’s exactly what we’re here to celebrate this month!
STEM is for everyone—and the world needs more creative, curious, and fearless female inventors to shape the future. Women make up nearly half of the workforce but hold only 27% of jobs in STEM fields. That’s not because girls aren’t capable—it’s because they haven’t been given enough opportunities to explore, experiment, and see STEM as something exciting and made for them. This month is about changing that narrative and making sure girls know that they belong in science and engineering just as much as anyone else.
So how do we get more girls excited about STEM? We make it fun and rewarding! We take away the pressure, bring in creativity, and show them that science and engineering are actually giant playgrounds for innovation.
That’s what Makey Makey does best. Our invention kit lets you turn everyday objects into touchpads, making circuits, coding, and engineering accessible and exciting. No need for intimidating tech jargon or complicated setups. Just plug, clip, and invent. And the best part? There’s no “wrong” way to do it!
Makey Makey is perfect for girls who love to create, design, build, and experiment. Whether they’re into music, gaming, fashion, art, coding, or storytelling, they can use Makey Makey to bring their ideas to life in ways they never imagined.
To celebrate Expanding Girls’ Horizons in Science and Engineering Month, why not dive into a fun, hands-on project? Here are some cool ideas to get started:
Want to mix music and science? Try making a fruit-powered piano! All you need is your favorite fruit, a computer, Makey Makey, and our piano app and suddenly, you’ve got a working keyboard that makes music with every tap.
Love gaming and coding? Ditch the store-bought controllers and design your own! Use foil, Play-Doh, or even your own body to create a custom game controller that lets you play your favorite computer games.
More into storytelling? Turn a simple book or poster into an interactive adventure where touching different pages or drawings triggers sound effects or voice recordings. It’s like magic—except it’s all science!
Encouraging girls in STEM doesn’t have to be complicated. The best thing parents, teachers, and mentors can do is give them opportunities to explore and experiment. Try a DIY STEM project at home. Let them tinker, fail, and try again—because that’s where real innovation happens. Host a STEM night at school, a library, or a local makerspace and watch as creativity sparks everywhere. Connect with amazing organizations like Girls Who Code, Techbridge Girls, and Black Girls Code, which offer support, mentorship, and resources to keep the momentum going. And most importantly, remind the girls in your life that STEM is for them.
This March, let’s amplify girls’ voices in STEM, give them the tools to invent, and show them that science and engineering are places where they belong.
Get involved by trying a Makey Makey project, sharing your inventions online, and encouraging the next generation of female inventors to dream big and build even bigger.
STEM needs more fearless, creative, game-changing girls—and it all starts with giving them the chance to experiment, invent, and explore. Let’s make this month one to remember!
Happy Expanding Girls’ Horizons in Science and Engineering Month! Let’s get inventing!
