What Are Backpacks?
Ever since the first version of the Makey Makey there have been expansion headers on the back of the board. If you have your Makey Makey handy, go ahead and flip the board over and take a look. The headers are those black rectangle things that stick out with holes in them. Many people overlook them or don’t even realize they are there, let alone learn how to use them to maximize the potential of their Makey Makey!
If you are wondering what they are yourself, here is the answer. Each hole is an input or an output for Makey Makey, and the key inputs work just like the pads on the front of the board, but instead of an alligator-clip-friendly format they are pin headers, or plugs, which are pretty common on other products that are popular with electrical engineers and hobbyist makers.
Sometimes the pin headers are harder to use for beginner inventors. You need the correct size wires, steady hands and patience to plug into those small holes, and sometimes tape to keep everything in place. So, to make it easier, we created Makey Makey Backpacks!
Makey Makey Backpacks are expansion boards that we designed to make it easy for everyone to use Makey Makey to its full potential and expand their invention toolbox! Backpacks plug into the black headers on the back of the Makey Makey board, giving you access to all of those input keys that sometimes get overlooked. Now -- in addition to the 6 inputs on the front -- the 12 inputs on the back of the board can be easily connected into your project with alligator-friendly “gator bites.”
Announcing the Code-a-Key Backpack!
Code-a-Key Backpack Contents
We at Makey Makey designed and built the Code-a-Key backpack to combine the strengths of both the Makey Makey and the BBC mico:bit (V1 or V2) into your projects in a simple and elegant way. No wad of wires, breadboarding (unless you want to!), or complicated circuits. The Code-a-Key backpack enables the micro:bit to trigger up to 6 keypresses and full mouse control on the back of your Makey Makey. On top of that, the micro:bit can read if you have pressed a key or used the mouse and respond in any number of different ways… display an image on its display, play a sound, or even control a servo motor!
