Spring break is here! Whether you're a parent looking to keep kids engaged or a teacher encouraging exploration over the break, one thing’s for sure—spring break isn’t just about relaxing (though we highly encourage that, too!). It’s also a golden opportunity for creativity, invention, and hands-on fun!
Instead of spending all break glued to screens (hello, endless scrolling!), why not encourage kids to build, tinker, and invent? With a little inspiration and a Makey Makey kit, they can turn everyday objects into musical instruments, game controllers, or even interactive art.
Think about it—spring is all about growth, new beginnings, and discovery. Just like the flowers blooming outside, kids’ creativity can flourish when they have the freedom to explore, test ideas, and create something totally new.
Encouraging kids to get hands-on with invention-based play builds critical thinking, problem-solving, and a whole lot of confidence. Plus, it’s just so much fun to see what they come up with! Maybe they'll design a new way to play their favorite video game, create a musical masterpiece with unexpected materials, or build an interactive story using their own artwork. The possibilities? Endless.
Here are a few ways to encourage open-ended exploration while making the most of this break:
Go Outside & Gather Supplies: Nature is a fantastic source of inspiration! Can kids turn leaves or even water into a Makey Makey-powered invention?
Mix Art & Tech: Encourage kids to turn their drawings into interactive pieces of art using DIY Conductive Paint. Touch a flower in their drawing, and it plays a sound—how cool is that?!
Remix Their Favorite Games: What if instead of using a keyboard, kids controlled a game with a handmade joystick? Or better yet, their feet? They can create their own Stomping Pad and stomp their way to high scores!
Invent New Instruments: With the Raindrop Orchestra, kids can use nature as inspiration for creating music.
Create a Custom Game Controller: With a Super Simple Joystick, kids can design their own controller out of modeling clay. Want to make it extra fun? Have them shape it like a butterfly, flower, or even a wiggly caterpillar!
One of the best things about Makey Makey is that it gives kids permission to experiment. There are no rules—just endless ways to build, try, tweak, and try again.
If a project doesn’t work the first time? No problem! That’s part of the process. Real inventors embrace failure as part of discovery. Encourage kids to ask questions, make changes, and celebrate small wins. (Because let’s be honest, getting a banana to work as a spacebar is worth celebrating.)
Spring break is all about making memories, and what better way to do that than by inventing something new together? Whether kids are coding, crafting, or creating interactive music, they’ll be learning without even realizing it.
So go ahead—get creative, get hands-on, and let imaginations run wild! And if your kids make something amazing, we want to see it! Tag us on social media (@makeymakey) and use #SpringBreakWithMakeyMakey.
